Joint Memorial Monument in the Grabiszyński Park
loctaion: Wrocław, Grabiszyńska
investor: Municipal Council of the City of Wrocław
area: 2,0 ha
project year: 2005

The idea behind the project was to create a space which would differ from typical monuments dedicated to victims of war or genocide, spaces which commemorate these events by their monumentalism and severity of form, attempting to evoke the tragic sense of those times or provide proof of the heroism of the participants of these events. We decided to exploit the existing space to create an isolated enclave, full of greenery, the sounds of nature, and flickering light. The inspiration was the image of a romantic "secret garden", an old orchard, the charm of a historic cemetery. We wanted to create a space in which, just as in old cemeteries, a certain amount of neglect would enhance the atmosphere. Ultimately, we wanted to create a space which would be beautiful regardless of the time of day or year, in which birds could find shelter among the trees and shrubs both in spring and winter. The preserved gravestones and soil transferred from other no longer extant cemeteries create, as we understand it, a sacred space where visitors may to some degree move about and interact with the space along raised wooden walks.
